Rain, Rain, Go Away ... Sun, Sun, Shine My Way

No more Seattle weather jokes for me, not for a few months at least. They are backfiring with a vengeance!

My doctor gave me the warning when the results of my annual physical exam showed a high deficiency in vitamin D. She listed the lack of sunshine in our city as one of the causes. I raised my eyebrows and laughed out loud when she said it but apparently, my exposure to daily equatorial sun for over 4 decades prior to life here, has relevance. The significantly weaker sun rays in the Seattle area over a shorter period have failed to trigger the level of vitamin D production my body requires. Another cause is lactose intolerance and a reduction of fish consumption in my diet.

I've always believed that supplements help one's health in the long run but didn't think that vitamin deficiency can be harmful to be life threatening. One of the dangers tied to Vitamin D deficiency is risk of fracture and bone weakness. No wonder, my heal bone shattered last year! Other complications for aging adults (my category-lah) are osteoporosis, muscle weakness, cancer, high BP, multiple sclerosis and arthritis.

My low mark is not fatal but worrying enough for a medical prescription until October. It comes with fishy and milky additions to my daily menus. At the same time, I literally have to soak in the sun - 10-15 minutes, at least twice a week to face, arms, hands or back. Thank God the weather has been cooperating lately.

Lola has no deficiency but a compulsion to follow me everywhere,
so she is sunbathing as well, full coat of fur and all!

Hi Aunty Rita!

So...You are 'Oooot and abooot' in the sun, eh? Oh wow, that line fitted so well...

Hehe...;)

Enjoy your sunbathing, and do take care...Take the cue from lard-butt there...

*Hugs*

Rita, we've been enjoying the low 80's temperature for the past few days here. Lesley is right. Eat more fish, drink milk and maybe take cod liver oil. Enjoy your sunbathing :) :)

Hellooo Rita,

I could not help but laugh at Daphne's 'oooot & abooot' in the sun. Oh really? There's not much sun there? Would taking more cheese & yoghurt help on top of sun & fish? Celery? What else? Oh I'm not a medical expert. Doc knows best.

Oh boy Lola is so cute & well tanned already..ha ha. Cheers sweetie.

p/s that was me up there... typos..he he.

Hi Rita,

Vitamin D deficiency must be the current popular focus in the medical world. Seems almost every day there are articles about it on the online news, and two out of two acqauintances who recently went to the doctor, for widely different reasons, were given the same diagnosis and advice as you got.

Well, the recent weather here in Seattle has certainly adjusted to your prescription for sunlight :) Soak it up!

Rita, I am not into those pills and have live through the years without those additional supplement until recently, multi vitamin with mineral, even this I take whenever I remember to take, otherwise I just enjoy a normal meals, and a good breakfast of coffee, ensure and two half boiled eggs. These ritual kept me healthy. Another aspect of good living is to have a healthy thinking mind, always with positive thoughts and be good person always.

The body needs of man and woman are different so are our needs for supplements. Asmah take a numbers of pills as supplements and her ritual is on the dot. For that she is doing alright and stay healthy always.

I believe the tropical climate also has to do with the way we grow healthy into the golden age. Anyway do take those pills and enjoy life.

Have a nice day. Take care.

Hi Rita,

Hahaha, funny, you want the sun, and I am trying to stay away from the sun. My three boys love the sun and heat too. It's 89 degrees and all three were laying on the patio soaking in the sun.

Hi All ... My apologies! I believe very much in being late than never. Do you?? LOL!

On to replying your comments ...

Hooi Imm ... I tried to have fun but didn't get far as I prefer rain to sun and cold to hot. It didn't help that our neighbors have a couple of yap dogs who live up to their personality!

Hi Lesley ... After reading your post about eating raw salmon, I am re-thinking my love for sushi. Salmon is/was my favorite! I am my Sushi Chef if he serves frozen or raw fish before I place my next order.

Hi Daph ... I just tried to call you for the 5th time without success. Poor timing on my part-lah but it is nice to know that you are out enjoying Toronto. :)

Will keep trying!

Hey Gert ... Thank you for the award!

Cool weather here for the past few days with pouring rain at night. Great for sleeping! I hope fine weather follow you and Zue throughout your trip to visit with Lesley. Remember to take more
pictures this time. :)

Hi Ruby ... Yes, the saying "it rains 9 months out of a year in Seattle" is true. Works for me environmentally but not medically. :(

Cheese, yoghurt and celery are not on my list of favorite foods, so they probably good for health. LOL!

Rita Ho said...

Hey Zue ... Thanks a bunch for the award. It is rolling on my homepage now. :)

Enjoy your weekend trip to Long Island with Gert!

Rita Ho said...

Hey Pi ... Lola's sunblock = shaving. LOL!

Rita Ho said...

Hi Louis ... Looks like we may have jinxed the sunshine days with our comments. Haha!

And yes, Vitamin D deficiency is no longer taken for granted. My doctor says it contributes to a list of serious illnesses in the long run. Good news for cod-liver oil producers and the likes. :)

Hi Pak Idrus ... It was great chatting with you this morning and I heard back from Lin as well. :)

Thank you for sharing your successful health plan towards the golden age, especially the tips on good living via positive thinking. David is a firm believer. Me ada sikit wayward hormones once in a while. Haha!

Hi Mush ... Mild summer is the best kind. Thank you for sharing your sunshine. Please send more! LOL!

Hi Dawn ... Seems like most dogs love basking in the sun, fur and all. :)

By the way, someone abandoned 5 lab puppies on the roadside here - about 6-8 weeks old. I'm considering adopting one but not so sure if I can handle the training. Lovely pups, don't look sick at all. Thinking ....

Rita Ho said...

Jacqui ... Hey! Thank you for the invite. I might take up your offer if the weather continues to hurt my health. My late MIL lived in Louisiana for many years and love the place. She would be pleased if I could visit. :)

Hi Norma ... I hope you are enjoying a good week now that the worst of Ms J's dental surgery is over. For me, oral work is the most painful and I have had surgery a plenty! The nerves in the area are so sensitive and move with every breathe we take. I am glad it wasn't that bad for Ms J.

Are you still having rainy days up north? Pouring here at night which is what I like. :)

Rita Ho said...

Hi Yatie ... Don't your worry about my lack of sun here. Stay safe and take care during the H-season. :)

Rita Ho said...

Thank you, Puteri. I will consider CA once some producer there is willing to peep at my yet to be completed film script. Still in mimpi stage! Sigh.

Hey Rita
Good ole faithful Lola. Im sure she too can benefit from some Vit D. Enjoy the sun while you still can. Few more months before the cold weather sets in. Its been a good summer but truth be told, Im actually looking forward to winter. Weird I know.

Do take care Rita.
Lee

Rita Ho said...

Hi Lee ... Not weird at all to prefer winter. I am the same way, may moan and groan when the freeze hinders outdoor activities but will still take it over hot blistering days. :)

You take care too and give Max a tight warm hug for me, a butt sniff from Lola.
